It’s been less than a year since his debut album dropped but Plies is already planning to release his sophomore album this June. In this SOHH exclusive, the Florida born rapper talks about his new album, Definition of Real, his upcoming reality show and his new clothing line.
As SOHH previously reported, Plies is preparing to release his sophomore album, on June 10th, just ten months after dropping his debut.
“To be able to turn around two albums in a ten month frame, first and foremost I do understand how much of a blessing it is to have such success on The Real Testament,” he says. “To have a certified gold album in this climate definitely speaks volumes.”
Plies is planning to repeat the success of his first album by following the same format of keeping costs down.
“I always like to keep my overhead low,” he says “I don’t want to be in a situation where I’m spending $2 million on a project.”
Instead of paying high prices for beats from big name producers, Plies prefers to rely on production from his brother’s company, The World Music Group.
“We got a lot of good producers under our umbrella,” he says. “At the end of the day if you’re not careful you can go through this business coming out with great records, great albums and walk away with nothing to show. So, I’m just trying to tighten up my business side of it.”
Plies also decided to go easy on the guest appearances. He didn’t have any other rappers on his first album and he won’t have any on this one.
“I kept it simple,” he says. “It’s all me on this album but I was able to work with a Ne-Yo who gave me that good radio side, that radio look.”
The Florida rapper understands the importance of a strong, radio friendly first single. On his first album, he found success with the T-Pain laced, “Shawty,” which topped the US hip-hop charts and sold over one million ringtones.
In addition to his sophomore album, Plies has a female clothing line and a reality dating show in the works based on his two-part single, entitled “Bust It Baby.”
“The definition of a ‘Bust It Baby’ for me is the best female sexual experience,” he explains
The footage of his “Bust It Baby” casting call racked up over 200,000 plays on YouTube and has sparked a bidding war between three major television networks. His “Bust It Baby” clothing line is 95% done and is comprised of “sexy” items like short shorts and spandex.

Florida rappers Plies and Rick Ross have embarked on a new tour, as both artists’ prepare for their sophomore releases.
The Hypnotized Tour debuted in Columbia, South Carolina on Saturday (Mar 1), and will run through 18 more dates across the country before coming to a close in Los Angeles.
“I look forward to seeing all my fans on the road on the Hypnotized Tour,” said Plies in a statement. “They can expect to see me in raw form. I will be on fire going into summer 2008. The Hypnotized Tour [is] an advance taste of what is to come!”
Part of Plies’ schedule for this summer includes the release of his sophomore album, Definition of Real, due out on Atlantic Records on June 24, the label announced today (March 6).
Fans have a much shorter wait for Rick Ross’s sophomore release, Trilla, which hits stores March 11.
Trilla is the follow up to Ross’ RIAA-certified gold debut Port of Miami and features appearances by Jay-Z, Lil’ Wayne, T-Pain, Trick Daddy and Flo-Rida, as well as production from The Runners, Cool and Dre, and 2008 Grammy Award winner DJ Toomp.
“This is a tour put together to celebrate the best and brightest Southern Hip-Hop has to offer and what is to come” explained Terrence Huggins of T.H.E. Booking Agency, the company behind the Hypnotized Tour. “These artists created something huge out of nothing and it is time to celebrate that fact. This is a way for people across the country to witness history in the making.”
Joining Plies and Rick Ross on the tour are Lil’ Boosie, The Dream and Pleasure P, formerly of the group Pretty Ricky.
Appearances are also expected by Yo Gotti, Trina, and possibly Juvenile, all scheduled to join the tour on special dates.
In addition to completing his current tour and recording Definition, Plies is in the final planning stages of a new partnership with Don Diva Magazine to produce the Plies/Don Diva Prison Tour.
Details of the tour have yet to be released.

2007 was an amazing year for Plies and the rapper is now ready to make his sophomore debut!!!! “Definition of Real” is set to be released June 24th!!!! Even though this isn’t really Plies 2nd cd (more like his 3rd or 4th, I believe), it’s his 2nd release on a major label. Here is more of what to expect from a press release sent to us from Atlantic Records:
“Bust It Baby, Pt. 1″ is already stirring things up at radio and throughout the hip-hop underground. This week, the Ft. Myers, Florida-bred rapper personally presented “Bust It Baby, Pt. 2,” the second installment of the double single – featuring a special guest appearance from Ne-Yo – to radio stations across his homestate of Florida.
“DEFINITION OF REAL” arrives hot on the heels of Plies’ 2007 debut, “THE REAL TESTAMENT,” which has received RIAA gold certification. The album – featuring the blockbuster hit singles, “Shawty (Feat. T-Pain)” and “Hypnotized (Feat. Akon)” – entered the Billboard 200 at #2 upon its release last summer and continues to run strong, coming in this week at #10 on Billboard’s “Top Rap Albums” ranking. In addition, “THE REAL TESTAMENT” has spawned a series of blockbuster ringtones, with a minimum of five tracks from the album present on Nielsen Ringscan’s “Top 200 Mastertones” chart for the last 23 consecutive weeks.
Plies is currently featured on the cover of Don Diva Magazine, heralding their partnership on the upcoming “Plies/Don Diva Prison Tour.” Further details of Plies’ historic pairing with the “Original Street Bible” will be announced shortly.
In other news, Big Gates Records – the label co-owned by Plies with his brother, Big Gates – recently signed its first new artist, marking the rapper’s entry into the music industry’s executive class. An official announcement unveiling Plies’ new protégé will be made in the coming weeks.
